BAMILEKE, HORNS and TRUMPETS, Cameroon
Prestige drinking horns were a man's most important personal article. Trumpets, made from horn or carved from wood, were used ceremonially for their sound. Trumpets like the largest,, 1 and 2, were also displayed as an arch through which the king appeared.
Although exquisitly carved, most of our Bamileke horns show no evidence of age or use and were probably made to be sold.
