BAMILEKE, MASK 2, 15.5", $500, Cameroon
The Bamileke reserve their highest allegiance for their linear ancestors whose spirits are embodied in the skulls of the deceased. Recognizing the importance of the skull, representations of the head are found in nearly all decorated ceremonial objects like this expressive mask.
PLEASE NOTE: We have tried to provide photographs that show the maximum amount of detail which unfortunately results in some color distortion. This mask is actually black, not brown.
Although exquisitly carved, most of our Bamileke masks show no evidence of age or use and were probably made to be sold.
