BATEKE /TSAYE, MASKS, Congo
These flat, round, abstracted masks are enhanced with symbols of Tsaye beliefs. Masks like these were used in rituals of Kidumu, the male association, the masks express their social and religious values. Nos. 8, 9, 13 & 15 are more unusual types. Sorry, but the color on 12-17 is misleading, they do not have this purplish cast.
These Bateke / Tsaye masks show no evidence of age or use and were probably made to be sold.
