BURA, TERRACOTTA VESSEL FRAGMENTS, Niger

Custom stands by Simon Gregory.

Little is known of the Bura civilization (ca. 3rd - 11th centuries), which was first discovered in 1975, excavations began in 1983. Most of the objects dug up are terracotta heads or vessels. The tall vessels were buried with the neck or opening down, usually contained remnants of cloth or objects probably associated with funeral practices. They are discovered by digging down, hence the large number with broken tops. They remain fragile, hence this group of fragments.

Our Bura terra cotta fragments have been vetted as authentic but have not been tested by thermoluminesence, which would cost more than the pieces sell for.

When shown in the photos, the custom metal stands are included in the price. Measurements are the size of the fragment only.
