EKET STYLE OGBOM  HEADDRESSES

These Eket Ogbom headdresses show no evidence of age or use and were probably made to be sold. They are, however, wonderfully abstracted figures.

For those of you who missed out on Sotheby's May 2013, lot  98, the $815,000 Eket Ogbom  (28.25" high), these are all  we can offer as consolation.

Eket sculpture includes traditional masks, figures, shutters, doors and other objects from the Eket people, a subgroup of the Ibibio of Nigeria. Recognizable for their decorative patterns and repetition of shapes, Eket sculpture takes several forms of which these Ogbom headdresses are the most unique, with strongly abstracted concave bodies. Figures like these are danced in the annual Ogbom ceremony.
