WOODEN ICONS 6, Ethiopia
Ethiopia has been a Christian nation since the 4th century. Crosses like these were hand carried during services. The designs on the back sides are similar to those on the front but usually with fewer incised lines. Made of a silver alloy, they are individually cast in Ethiopia. These special crosses are hand-painted with scenes from the gospels.
