FULANI, METALWORKS, West Africa

The Fulani, many of whom are nomadic, live in an area from Mali in the west to Cameroon in the east.

Tall iron healing staffs were assembled from other iron objects and were to function in a similar way to the better known YORUBA Osanyin Healing staffs. Price includes base.

Modesty aprons, cache-sex jewelry, denote age, status and social condition. They were worn to attract attention and protect against evil. The two with leatherwork relate to both Kirdi beaded aprons and Tuareg leatherwork.

The necklaces show an inventive combination of beads, chain metalwork, small cast pieces and British West African coins.
