DOGON GAMEBOARD (MANKALA) 1, Mali

Photographs © Tim Hamill

DOGON, GAMEBOARD (MANKALA) 1, 28", $1500, SOLD

Despite its appearance, this gameboard might have been made to be sold.

In addition to the numerous types of masks and figures used traditionally in Dogon culture, most of their functional objects and architectural pieces have artistic significance, showing the importance they played in Dogon life. Dogon gameboards are usually simple forms but beautiful and often weathered by age and use.
