These figures are placed in shrines honoring ancestors and spirits. A complex structure of beliefs, relating both to systems of personal power and community cohesiveness, is associated with tthe Ikenga cult.
The figures depict strength, accomplishment and power. Often horned, they are sometimes shown holding a trophy head in one hand.
