KUBA BARKCLOTH TEXTILE 36

 KUBA
Barkcloth 36
45x14", $300

Photographs © Tim Hamill

The central area is barkcloth, made by beating a layer from just under the tree bark until it is thin and pliable.

Numbers 31-39 are of a new type for us, quilted from odd geometric pieces, often with both sides equal in quality. (The barkcloth does not need hems like woven material.) 31, 33 and 37 have raffia borders similar to those on raffia skirts. We have not seen this form in any reference book and although they are Kuba, we are not sure how, or if, they were used.

CARE: The cloths are not fragile (except for number 37 which has obvious damage) and can be pinned onto a wall or panel for display, or framed like a work on paper.
