KUBA DRUM 2, Dem. Rep. of Congo

KUBA, DRUM 2, 28.5", $600, Nigeria

Drums are among the most important art forms in Africa, used both as a musical instrument and as a work of sculpture significant in many ceremonial functions, including dance, rituals, story-telling and communication of messages.

This collection of drums is most impressive in the exhibition, all deeply carved with figures or heads. From the large poster piece shown here to the smallest,, each shows a careful design and execution meant to foster both belief and prestige.

The head on this drum is torn, missing 1/4th of the top and not really playable.
