KUBA, DRUM 8, 41", $2000, Nigeria
This Kuba drum has been vetted by a French dealer as being authentic with significant signs of use and age.
Drums are among the most important art forms in Africa, used both as a musical instrument and as a work of sculpture significant in many ceremonial functions, including dance, rituals, story-telling and communication of messages.
This collection of drums is most impressive in the exhibition, all deeply carved with figures or heads. From the large poster piece shown here to the smallest,, each shows a careful design and execution meant to foster both belief and prestige.
The head on this drum is intact, but not really playable. It has probably been replaced many times. There are some cracks and erosion on the sides.
