Masks like these were used in instruction and initiation ceremonies into the five progressive levels of Bwami, the Lega men's association.
For the photographs the eye slots were blocked with black cloth to simulate how the mask would appear when worn or hung on a wall. Those with a second measurement is the height with raffia.
Despite their appearance, we believe these Lega masks were probably made to be sold.
