NDEBELE, MAPOTO APRON 6, So. Africa, 23", $600, SOLD
This beaded garment, made by and worn by women, was for ceremonial occasions. It defined one's status, progressing from girlhood to womanhood. The Mapoto was reserved for married women. This piece is older, on leather, but has some loss of beadwork throughout.
