NDEBELE JOCOLO APRON 8

Photographs © Tim Hamill

NDEBELE, JOCOLO APRON 8, So. Africa, 23", $800

This beaded garment, made by and worn by women, was for ceremonial occasions. It defined one's status, progressing from girlhood to womanhood. The Jocolo, with it's five fingers, was reserved for married women. This piece is older, on leather, but has some loss of beads on the edges.
