SANGO
RELIQUARY GUARDIAN FIGURE 9
20" high
$1000
Gabon

These figures, smaller and less familiar than Bakota and Mahongwe religuary guardians, were usually placed in basketry containers holding relics of important clan ancestors. Sheathed in metal (brass or copper), the figures are abstracted into a diamond shape below the neck. This one with raffia is in a basketry containers (see photo detail from No. 11). This piece is missing the lower inverted basketry form. It has two shells and a horn on the top of the basket.

Old Sango guardians are very rare. Despite its appearance, this Sango figure shows little evidence of age or use and was probably made to be sold.
