SANGO
JANUS RELIQUARY GUARDIAN FIGURE 11
18" high
$800
Gabon

These figures, smaller and less familiar than Bakota and Mahongwe religuary guardians, were usually placed in basketry containers holding relics of important clan ancestors. Sheathed in metal (brass or copper), the figures are abstracted into a diamond shape below the neck. This figure is in a basketry container (see photo detail). It has two small horns on the top of the basket.

Old Sango guardians are very rare. Despite its appearance, this Sango figure shows little evidence of age or use and was probably made to be sold.
