SENGESE, THROWING KNIVES, Nigeria

Locally called Sengese, these unique iron weapons from the Matakam people of the Mandara Mountains of northern Nigeria started out as throwing knives and were later used as dance wands..

Warriors would hold two or three in their left hand with their shield and throw with the right hand. The graceful iron form terminates in a handle wrapped in cane or leather strips.
