Deble, carved figures whose legs merged into solid cylindrical bases were designed to be used as percussion instruments. Held by their arms, the heavy figures were pounded against the ground to provide a rythmic beat for Senufo dancers.
In spite of their elegance, the condition of this pair makes us doubt that either of the two figures saw actual tribal use.
