MBAKA (NGBAKA) STYLE MASK 25, DRC
Photographs © Tim Hamill
The MBAKA (or NGBAKA) people of northwest Zaire use masks representing
ancestor spirits in elaborate initiation ceremonies. With similarities in
style to Bembe and especially Lega masks, Mbaka masks are recognizable primarilly
for their ridged noses.
7" high x 4.5" wide
Despite its appearance, we believe this Mbaka mask was probably made to be sold.
Notethat there is some wood loss on the back at both the top and the bottom.
