MOSSI DOLL 1

Photographs © Tim Hamill

MOSSI, DOLL 1, 11.5", $160, Burkina Faso SOLD

Owned by Mossi girls and women, these small figures that we call "dolls" could function both as a toy for a young girl or as an object to promote the fertility of a woman. All show some variation of the special coiffures worn by Mossi women. This one is embellished with leather and cowrie shells.

Despite its traditional form and appearance, this doll shows no evidence of age or use and was probably made to be sold.
