SANGO STYLE RELIQUARY GUARDIAN 13

Photographs © Tim Hamill

SANGO, RELIQUARY GUARDIAN FIGURE 13, 20.5"high, $600, SOLD

These figures, smaller and less familiar than Bakota and Mahongwe religuary guardians, were usually placed in basketry containers holding relics of important clan ancestors. Sheathed in metal (brass or copper), the figures are abstracted into a diamond shape below the neck.

Old Sango guardians are very rare. Despite its appearance, this Sango figure shows little evidence of age or use and was probably made to be sold.
