NUPE POSTS, Nigeria
Most Nupe art is abstract, with only some abstracted animals in relief
on their doors and rare pots The posts predate and are possible influences
on 20th C. sculptors such as Brancusi, whose columns and bases are similar
in spirit to these traditional Nupe works.
The large houseposts, 17 - 26 were supports for beams or the roof.
The extremely tall thin posts were the center post of the house, serving as a hub for the thatched roof, but not supporting much weight. We are exhibiting them suspended on the walls.
The smaller ones, 1 - 16, although placed in the ground, were ceremonial altar pieces, not structural.
Numbers 7 and 11 were originally joined with other pieces, probably for something similar to a bedframe.
