ETHIOPIAN, FLAT HEADRESTS, Ethiopia

These headrests have been vetted as authentic with signs of use and age.

In many African cultures, small wooden "pillows" are used to support the head during sleep and in some instances to preserve a hairstyle. In Ethiopia, the headrests come in several forms and relate to other intricate, but abstract works. This group I refer to as "Flat". The back view (shown) of each is similar to the front view. Many still have a protruding bump, pierced for a cord. The side views are numbered from left to right.
