BAGA / NALU, BANDA MASKS, Guinea

Masks like these large, horizontally worn masks, Banda, were used by the nearby and closely related Nalu people. The masks blend features of crocodiles, antelopes, sharks and humans in a very complex, Baroque style. They symbolically guarded households, crops and even entire villages and appear in harvest ceremonies.

The height given on this page is as photographed, including the raffia. More measurements are given on the individual pages. The large, custom made stands are included on a few, but not all, of the masks. Some were placed on borrowed stands just to be photographed. For information on the bases GO TO BAGA NALU BASES PAGE.
